The Phrost is All Over - - - 4 bar second endings…

The Phrost is All Over - - - 4 bar second endings…

Alright, so I’m being lazy, but there’s all you egg-spurts out there with, in a few cases, livlier brain cells than mine, at times, and maybe just off the top of your heads you can come up with the tune names and the links. And then there’s all those accumulated hours of trial and experience too, and libraries full of tune collections - a priceless resource.

So, what am I on about this time - something practical? In particular, though not limited, I’m wanting this to be a sharing of tunes with nice long distinct second endings, like 4-bars in the B-part of a 32 bar tune, like "The Frost Is All Over" - or anything akin to that you think might fit the bill.

Why distinct 4-bar second endings…

For dear Zina - They give a great kick up the backside to dancing…for example rounding off the finish of a 32 bar dance and leading into the repeat…and for stepping, a challenge to follow it musically…

Re: The Phrost is All Over - - - 4 bar second endings…

What! Are you suggesting that stepdancers actually *listen* to the music while dancing?! My dear fellow, all they do is count — what they’re thinking to themselves is something along the lines of "step double up and turn and flare — oh god, how does the next step start again?!" and they’re too busy to notice the nardy clever second ending…

But I’ll agree that for the most part, second endings change things up agreeably. Even if the dancers don’t know why. :)

There’s always the exception - some of the older ways and dancers I’ve been fortunate to know, and some new and younger dancers too. That is when I take particular notice, when they are listening and not just stepping through, but answering, following, and complementing the rhythm and the melody. Then - WOW! I would say the same of a good bodhran player, though realizing that I’ve just opened that can of worms - as for some the only good bodhran player is a - - -

LOL — ceolachan, I was teasing you.

Re: The Phrost is All Over - - - 4 bar second endings…

The slide The Old Favorite has a second ending the way some people play it. Some also play the B part of Out on the Ocean different the second time through, although the differences are in the middle, not the end. I, for one, listen to the tunes while I dance, although my wife tells me that I also count under my breath constantly while dancing.

Re: The Phrost is All Over - - - 4 bar second endings…

I like that, I’ve kown some others who count too when they dance, some very good dancers too, but you can tell, sometimes it is a blank look and an ever so subtle nodding - or even blinking.

I know "The Old Favourite" with a 2-bar second ending, but would be interested to know the 4-bar variant. Maybe you could post it in the notes to that tune, including the 4-bar variant of "Out on the Ocean"?

I have also played this slide different than given above - with the B-part ending the second time through with the same last four bars as the A-part. Is that the way you meant?

I have also played "Out on the Ocean" where the only change is with the 4th bar of the B-part…low the first time through, and then high the second time… Is that what you were remembering? I’ll give that variant in the ‘comments’…

Re: The Phrost is All Over - - - 4 bar second endings…

Stepdancers do listen actually!

I’ve played thousands of tunes for them, and with many players, not solo, and for many teachers, and you would be off this planet to think that all they do is count!

The Gold Ring - 5-7/8? parts

https://thesession.org/tunes/1351 - 4-part
https://thesession.org/tunes/1371 - 5-part

O’Neill’s = 7-parts & ABCs given in the ‘comments’ to #s 37 & 1371 given above.

It would be great, on both counts, to see the 8-part, or 8th part for this tune on site, as well as any distinct 4-part second endings for it.

- hmmmmmm, counting to 10 without phrasing…

I must have a thing for 4-bar second endings. When Junji showed me this tune I suggested the 4-ber ending, and he liked it.

A particular setting of Quilty Shore (appears in comments) https://thesession.org/tunes/3437. Both versions get played at our session, but I prefer the 2nd ending one.

This is a common change where the last 4-bars that make up the B-part’s second ending are the same as those for the A-part. This is very common, for example amongst hornpipes…
