Frank Cassidy, Donegal Fiddler ~ the missing recordings

Frank Cassidy, Donegal Fiddler ~ the missing recordings

Back in the 70s Con Cassidy sent me searching for these, several reel-to-reel reels of Frank Cassidy’s music made by a local publican. I never did manage to find them, but not for want of trying. Before I left Eire in the 80s I left that information with the folks I’d intended on handing these recordings to ~ at the Irish Folklore Department , though I’d also mentioned them to certain Comhaltas luminairies as well, in Dublin, with the hopes that someone would chase those recordings and succeed where I’d failed. I never heard anything more. Does anyone know of any recordings floating about by this Donegal fiddler? Con sang his praises highly. Does anyone have any tales about Frank and the Cassidy gang they’d be willing to share? I can but ask…

Re: Frank Cassidy, Donegal Fiddler ~ the missing recordings

hi. frank was indeed an amazing musician, both himself and Con. while i unfortunatly don’t have any recordings, there is a project running in kilkar collecting all the old music of masters such as the cassidys. if you want to email me i can try get you numbers of people involved with it such as michael gillespie of kilkar who as far as i know runs it and would be very helpful i’m sure. people like dermot byrne of altan also have alot of old music on tape and it’d be well worth talking to them.

hope that helps (if it does, i want a copy!)

If it helps, I would be talking to friends who would have played with him. I will drop you an e-mail.

Some results. When I was out ‘West’ of Donegal town I’d heard several accounts for these reel-to-reel recordings. My concern was that they be found and put in the right hands for remastering. The tales I’d heard were ~

they’d gone to America ~ ?

they’d been destroyed in a fire ~ ?

etc…

Con always sang Franks praises and it would be a priceless treasure if these could be found and made available for others to be inspired by and to learn from…

I’d heard form others, including Con Cassidy, that Frank was a very well respected fiddler from the area and that he had a lot of great and unusual tunes, and some of these I did get to enjoy second hand, but, that is something this recording lacks. However, it is still blessed by offering us some fine examples of Frank Cassidy’s fiddling ~ 11 reels, 10 airs, 3 jigs, a couple of hornpipes and one waltz… I guess those lost recordings still haven’t been found, or were lost in the fire, or in the breakdown of the media…

This recording still represents grand music and the duets with John Doherty are also priceless… 🙂

Hallelujah, and bless Donegal, where my wife says she’s taking my ashes if I leave before her… 😉
