Bodhran teachers in Ireland

Bodhran teachers in Ireland

Hi there. I will be travelling to Ireland in June this year and am looking for an advanced bodhran teacher who is willing to impart teaching techniques that I can bring home to Australia. Who can reccomend some good ones. Contact details would also be appreciated.
Thanks, Jeremy

Re: Bodhran teachers in Ireland

where are you going in Ireland? If you go through Ennis, stop in Custy’s and ask there. They’ll be able to find you someone for a lesson or two.

Re: Bodhran teachers in Ireland

If you can get in contact with Junior Davey (sligo area) or Jim Higgins in Galway they are both great teachers.

Re: Bodhran teachers in Ireland

There are a number of tutors, where are you going in Ireland?

Both Paul Marshall and Paul Phillips in Belfast are excellent. Email me and I will give you their contact information. I am sure ether of the Pauls could also suggest to you someone in another area if need be.

Peace,
Ed

Re: Bodhran teachers in Ireland

There’s a book you can buy, probably at the airport, called “teach yourself bodhran in an hour”. It will give you all you need to know. (I think you even get a free bodhran with it. And one of those double ended stick things)

“There’s a book you can buy, probably at the airport, called ”teach yourself bodhran in an hour".

That’s the long tutorial version, and it doesn’t include the bodhrán and stick thing (tipper, beater, or cipín for those of broader prospective).

Ed

A “long” tutorial? Surely some mistake?

Re: Bodhran teachers in Ireland

No mistake at all Michael, the book you cited is for those that learn slower, ergo the title; “teach yourself bodhran in an hour”. There are much shorter tutorials available. However all have your local listed in their directory as one of the most welcoming of bodhráns and guitars in Edinburgh with a special note to sit next to the fiddle and viola player for the best of session experiences. 😉

Peace,
Ed

Don’t be dissuaded by Mr. G’s remarks, Jeremy. He’s just jealous about how the bodhran case doubles as an overnight bag for all of the babe action bodhran players get. 😉

Re: Bodhran teachers in Ireland

Do not, repeat not, buy a book. Michael can’t play the bodhran.

who says?

Re: Bodhran teachers in Ireland

Me. Can you not read.

Re: Bodhran teachers in Ireland

ah, but is it can’t play or won’t play?

Remember that brilliant quote from John Lennon from about 1971 I think:

Interviewer: “You once said that Ringo was the best drummer in the world …”
John: “He wasn’t even the best drummer in the beatles.”
