Lecture on the Monaghan Piping Tradition

The annual Féile Patrick Byrne lecture will be given by Dr. Seán McElwain on the Monaghan Piping Tradition. Seán was recently awarded a TG4 Gradam Ceoil for his PhD research on long forgotten traditional music from the Monaghan area and for his follow-on CD project based on this research - Our Dear Dark Mountain with the Sky Over It (https://thesession.org/recordings/4708). At Féile Patrick Byrne he will focus on the piping tradition, including information of late 19th century / early 20th century South Monaghan pipers Philip Goodman and Dan Markey.

Uilleann piper Martin McCormack will play many of the pieces which Seán will speak about. Martin’s CD was reviewed here (https://thesession.org/recordings/1715) and he is a brilliant player.

The evening will be officially launched by the President of CCÉ Ann Finnegan and will be followed by a session in Markey’s. Admission is free and all are welcome.
