Internationally acclaimed fiddler Jamie Laval returns to Glasgow from the USA later this year. GFW invites Fiddlers to a full day workshop to experience Jamie’s teaching, technique and tunes.
The day concludes with a short concert followed by a session for all participants.

10:00 – 12:00 Technique Workshop
Primarily oriented towards fiddlers wishing to improve their technical abilities, this class will dive deeply into the mechanics of ergonomic, pain-free playing, developing good intonation (ptich), examining bowing patterns that produce a compelling rhythmic groove, and how to develop a beautiful tone. Two or three tunes will be taught with an emphasis on how to pick up new tunes quickly, how to improve one’s speed and fluency, and the best way to practice for maximum results.

12:45 – 14:45 Workshop Tunes and Style
Several new tunes will be taught (jig, hornpipe, reel, march, strathspey, etc.) while discussing the finer points of authentic traditional styles and a range of appropriate individualisms. Both common ornamentation and advanced bagpipe-style ornamentation will be examined. Performance considerations such as the construction of imaginative tune sets, improvising backup accompaniment, and expounding upon the emotional character of a melody will be explored.
14:45 – 15:15 Tea & Social
15:15 – 18:00 Concert & Session
Jamie will give a short performance of some of his favorite Celtic and original selections which have won him accolades. A community tune session will follow for all participants.
