About the artists

On Saturday, August 19, 2006 KCT Concerts will feature the extraordinary tenor banjo player Darren Maloney. His band is comprised of fiddler Vonnie Quinn, button accordionist John Redmond, and guitarist / vocalist Dave Fahy. This special concert has been added to the Traditional Irish Music Series and will begin at 8 pm at the Katharine Cornell Theater on Spring St. in Vineyard Haven.

Darren Maloney is fast becoming recognised as the premier Irish tenor banjo player. Since the release of his critically acclaimed debut album, ‘Who?’, he has signed an artist endorsement deal with one of the world’s renowned banjo makers. ‘Finding consummate musicians to represent our banjos is not always an easy task. Darren Maloney falls into a level of musicianship that has a limited membership. His technical expertise is beyond compare’.

Darren was heavily influenced during his early musical days by Irish banjo greats like Mick Moloney, Cathal Hayden and Gerry O’ Connor, but it was an interview with Bela Fleck which had the most influence on Darren’s music and composition. Having already won numerous prizes and toured worldwide, including the U.S., Scandinavia, Europe and Sri Lanka, Darren set about recording his debut solo album. He composed over half of the pieces on, ‘Who?’ and drew on all the genres which were influencing him, from Fleck to J.S. Bach. He also took on the role of producer, arranger and engineer to get exactly what he was hearing in his mind. The album has received world-wide acclaim, including an Irish Times feature, radio play and making the charts for the top albums of the year but it was in May 2006 when Darren received the ultimate of endorsements when he played at Carnegie Hall.

In April 2006 Darren decided to relocate to New York City to further his musical experiences. He was invited, along with 15 other top string instrumentalists, to participate in a professional training workshop crossing all musical genres in Carnegie Hall. A panel of the top acoustic musicians, including Edgar Meyer, Mike Marshall, Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas and Matt Glaser, all played a part in hand picking the participants. The highlight of the week was the final performance in Carnegie Hall where Darren performed some of his latest compositions.

While living in his home town of Cavan, Ireland, Darren often played with fiddler Vonnie Quinn and they appeared many times on RTE [Public Broadcasting Service of Ireland] Radio One’s Ceilihouse. Vonnie moved to New York City two years ago to pursue her career in journalism. She is a trained classical violinist having studied first at The Limerick School of Music and then under Greg Ellis of the Vanbrugh String Quartet. She achieved performance and teaching diplomas from The Associated Board of Music and Trinity College London and performed with The National Youth Orchestra of Ireland. Vonnie, now a producer with Bloomberg Radio, can be seen performing in New York with a band she co-founded called Smirk.

Three time All-Ireland Champion button accordion player John Redmond is from County Wexford, Ireland and now lives in New York City where he performs with several Irish bands. His solo album,

‘East to Northeast’ got its start when John played with Jed Foley (Patrick Street, The House Band) at the Catskill’s Irish Arts Week in 1998. As he was leaving the stage to make room for fiddler Kevin Burke, they asked him to stay. Fortunately, John had learned Kevin’s tunes note for note from his albums. The idea of a CD rambled around until he finally asked Ged to play guitar and produce it. Those live tracks recorded with Ged and Kevin appear on the album.

Dave Fahy hails from Corofin in Co. Galway and has been a New York City resident for eight years. He is one of the most sought after Irish guitar players on the New York scene. His driving rhythms and fine singing have brightened many the performance. He is currently writing material for a long overdue debut CD.

Darren, Vonnie and Dave first played at the Katharine Cornell Theater in 2005 to an awestruck audience. Their return with the addition of John Redmond is sure to create more than a stir with evening of incredible music.
