Irish Rambling House Celebrates Imbolg on January 28th 2023
Return of the Irish Rambling House
Quarterly community event celebrating Irish culture returns January 28th!
PORTLAND, OREGON – A “Rambling House,” an evening of community dancing, singing and music-making in the Irish tradition, will open its doors again to the Portland community on Saturday, January 28th 2023. Join us in welcoming the advent of spring, traditionally celebrated in Ireland as Imbolg or St. Bridget’s Day, from 4pm to 10pm at the Waverly United Church of Christ at 3300 SE Woodward Street.
This event features concurrent programming including a guided slow session for instrumental beginners, a tune learning workshop for musicians, a set and céilí dance workshop, a singing circle, an Irish Gaelic conversation group, a youth session, and a potluck dinner culminating in an old-fashioned dance party called a Céilí Mór.
There will also be a brief lesson at the beginning of the Céilí Mór for newcomers to Irish dance. All dances will be called, which means the steps will be explained, demonstrated, and walked through before they are danced to live music. Céilí and set dances are group dances often featured at parties and social events in Ireland and are not high stepping or competitive, but dances everyone can enjoy regardless of age and experience.
This Rambling House is sponsored by the Mícheál Ó Domhnaill Branch of Oregon (MÓD), a local non-profit chapter of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, whose aim is to foster and promote the cultural traditions of Ireland. This open house-style event doubles as a fundraiser and has an open donation at the door to support the organization’s ongoing cultural programming endeavors. The Rambling House welcomes the entire community regardless of age or experience. Fáilte isteach!
