Tom Harleman

I’m from Carmel, Indiana. I play banjo (several styles), guitar, bass and am still trying to learn the fiddle. I’ve been playing since 1964 when my parents bought me my first banjo, a Kay. At the time I played in a group of boys my age in Peru, Indiana. In the late 1970’s I joined some Seymour, Indiana, friends in a bluegrass group named The New Shades of Bluegrass. We made an album called Early Morning Rain. For a few years we played around southern Indiana mostly just for fun. We never made enough to cover expenses. I like playing back up more than lead. Most of the time I can just hear the harmony notes. I’m not real good. But I’m more good than I am real bad.
