Tom Hanway

I’m a New Yorker now living in Longford, Ireland, where I play 5-string banjo, guitar, sing and do studio work, not limited to genre, including pop, rock, country, bluegrass, trad, TV and movie commercials.

Since the mid-’80s I have been developing “Celtic fingerstyle banjo” to play tunes from Ireland, Scotland, the Isle of Man, Cornwall, Wales, Brittany, ex-Celtic lands and the Celtic Diaspora (including Shetland, Cape Breton, Prince Edward Island, Appalachia and beyond).

Mel Bay published my first tune collection with cross-referenced glossary, Complete Book of Irish & Celtic 5-String Banjo in 1998, now a book and ebook (101 tunes). I now have four Irish and Celtic tune collections with Mel Bay. The most recent, 20 O’Carolan Irish Classics for 5-String Banjo and All Instruments, is in standard notation and tablature, also with chord suggestions for tune backers.
