Yvonne Mc Ginley, teacher and performer of the piano accordion, is from Stranorlar, Co. Donegal. She began playing the accordion at the age of 7. Yvonne first found her passion and respect for music during her 8 years as a member of St. Patrick’s Accordion Band, Drumkeen, Co. Donegal where she was introduced to a wide variety of music styles e.g. traditional, pop, classical, opera, blues, etc.
After having been awarded First Class Honours on the B.A. Irish Music and Dance at the University of Limerick, Yvonne went on to complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Music) at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Yvonne has studied under the tutorship of piano accordion players Karen Tweed (England) and Ian Lothian (Scotland) to name but a few.
Yvonne’s core focus has been Irish traditional music but her adaptability has seen her perform throughout Europe and record with several bands over the years incorporating many styles of music from other cultures and genres including Emmet O’Malley, Balkan Alien Sound, Pick of the Litter, Alalé and The Sumbrellas amongst others.
Yvonne has taught group classes for Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and on a one-to-one/small group basis. She has also taught music at primary school level and secondary school level.
She performs piano accordion and keyboards regularly in gigs and traditional music sessions around the country. She is constantly seeking out new repertoire, styles and projects.
Yvonne plays a Saltarelle Clifden piano accordion.
