Jacqui Rutten

I am a composer and singer from Australia - from Belgrave, where the traditional owners are the Wurundjeri. I have some Irish heritage from Counties Cork, and Kilkenny and I love Irish music, and have been composing and singing sacred Celtic music for a few years. I began busking at 14 with guitar, and I play some piano, have had violin lessons and have post-graduate music qualifications in opera assisted by a BP Award. I gained Australian and Indonesian scholarships to study a style of ornamental singing in central Java for gamelan, which I have applied to singing sacred Celtic music. I was recently in Dublin at Trinity College talking about vocal improvisation and composition as a delegate at a conference: ‘Composition in the 21st Century’. I have also been granted a composing residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Ireland next year in May. Last year mum gave me my grandfather’s tin whistle.
