John Kelly

This was on the Topic label, recorded in 1974. This is John Kelly Senior, the father of fiddlers James and John. Someone was asking in the "Discussions" section about recordings with no accompaniment, well, here you have it. 24 tunes on solo fiddle or concertina. 2 tunes [ "The Bunch Of Rushes" and "The Ivy Leaf" ] are played on both instruments. A great recording of a master.

Ditto on that, another great Topic recording… It is too bad that the value in these is not realized in re-releases, other than compilation albums. Many folks, myself included, have been pests with the hope of seeing these back on the ‘available’ list…

My copy of a copy of a copy of this recording includes the tunes listed here, along with 15 other tracks - mostly single tunes rather than sets. Some of these are Humours of Carrigaholt, Mickey Callaghan’s Jig, Spike Island Lassies, Mary Brennan’s Favorite, Salamanca. It is all solo unaccompanied. Does anyone know of another John Kelly recording that would have included these tracks?

He did Humours of Carrigaholt and Mikey Callaghan’s on Seoda Ceoil on Gael Linn and Mary Brennan’s is on Ceol an Clair, so these might be your sources. Both of these are VA though the former is mostly split between Kelly and Willy Clancy, both playing solo unaccompanied.

I know what I want on my Christmas list. I have all of these on LP, and I have high appreciation of the music of then Kellys, father and son, and have had that pleasure in person too. How glad I was to see that these recordings are being made available to inspire others as they have me…great stuff…

They are marvelous!!! ~ Highly recommended!!! :-)

Re: Fiddle And Concertina Player

Just got round to this. What a fantastic album.

The reissue CD has 32 tracks on it - a whole 8 more than the original.

Kitty’s Rambles (jig)
Gilbert Clancy’s, West Wind, Nellie Donovans (reels)
Farewell to Sean O Riada (slow air)
Ned Stapleton’s Reel
Sonny Brogan’s, Comhra Donn (hornpipes)
Lucy Campbell (reel)
Unknown, Thady Casey’s (Frieze Britches) (jigs)
Lord Mayo (air)
Unknown, Elizabeth Keane’s Slip Jig, Pat Kelly’s (slip-jigs)
Francie Byrne’s (reel)
Killard Reel 3:07

I don’t think you appreciate quite what a good fiddler John Kelly was without hearing these extra tracks.

Track no.30 is a set of three jigs: "Unknown/Elizabeth Keane’s Slip Jig/Pat Kelly’s’
I’d love to hear other people’s opinion on what the "Unknown" slip-jig is that starts this set. It’s great, and I’m trying to play it myself. Be nice to be able to put a name to it (other than ‘John Kelly’s Slip Jig of course)

Re: Fiddle And Concertina Player

Not showing above for some reason, but the original LP tracks [ without the "extra" CD tracks ] seem now to be available on "iTunes".

Re: Fiddle And Concertina Player

Sure about that, Kenny? I just looked and I don’t see anything. Do you know what the iTunes version might be called? Or perhaps it’s not available in the US, which would be a shame.

Re: Fiddle And Concertina Player

I’m looking at it in "iTunes" right now - "Fiddle and Concertina Player" - "John Kelly" - £7.99 for download - 21 tracks, plus digital booklet. In Scotland, anyway. I hadn’t realised there might be differences between what "iTunes" sell in the UK and elsewhere in the world.

Re: Fiddle And Concertina Player

Wow. Not showing up here. Incidentally, neither does the latest Ronan Browne / Peter O’Laughlin album. Wonder why.

Re: Fiddle And Concertina Player - in iTunes ?

Hello Daniel,
I’m now just listening to it on my iTune music account, and it’s available 8,99€ on the store (only the 21 LP’s tracks, not the 8 extra ones, but with the booklet) … but iTunes France …
same for Ronan Brown & Peter O’Loughlin : can get "Touch me if you Dare", "The Legacy" and "The South West Wind" …
Perhaps is it still possible to create an iTunes account else where (what I did some times ago to get some iOS and Mac apps from the US iTunes store) …?
