Yeh, That’s All It Is

This is brilliant stuff. Beautiful, rich-toned, crisp, spirited fiddle playing. Arty McGlynn backs John on the guitar, but he also picks a few tunes, and I haven’t heard anything like it - warm, melodic, intricate - just lovely!
The piano accompaniment by Brian McGrath is pretty subtle. I’m not really a fan of piano all over everything, especially electric piano - but in spite of my initial misgivings, it does work, and it’s not aggressive in the mix.
Get this CD, and if you see John, pester him to record an album with his brother James - that’s a CD the world needs.

John Carty tune identification

John Carty has a tune listed as "John Brennan’s" on his Yeh, That’s All It Is recording. It’s on track 5, right after Miss Monaghan

If you have the recording - do you know the tune by another name?

I’m finding more and more tunes called John Brennan’s….

Thanks,
Avi

Re: John Carty tune identification

That’s a tune that I know as "A Night In Ennis" https://thesession.org/tunes/1139

Some people call that the (other) Ashplant

But he’s playing it down in A, instead of in D.

Re: John Carty tune identification

Thanks Rev! Great tune. I did notice that Carty moved both tunes to A but then again that whole album is more experimental in nature. I like the sound in A but I can’t imagine starting off Miss Monaghan in A in our session… I’m likely to get a bow in my eye ;)

Good call Pete
Cheers
Avi

Re: John Carty tune identification

Yeah, that is truly a gem of a tune - one of my favorites to play! Now if I could just learn to sound a bit more like JC while I’m doing it 😏

For some reason I assumed John Carty was playing the tunes on guitar!

London Lassies

Is also the first tune on Cathal Hayden - Cathal Hayden album unless my ears deceive me

John Carty plays tenor Guitar so that’s what’s producing the tunes, not Arty McGlynn it seems. George White’s / Wedding Reel is one of the most beautiful sets I’ve ever heard
