“Seoltaí Séidte / Setting Sail: Ceolta Éireann 1957 - 1961”

2 CDs ~ Gael Linn, 2004 ~ to commemorate Gael Linn’s Golden Jubilee / 50 years…

Disc remastering and sound production ~ Harry Bradshaw

Notes, song transcriptions and translations ~ Nicholas Carolan

"Forty-Three Historic Recordings:
Traditional songs in Irish and tunes on fiddle, flute, accordion and uilleann pipes"

"A historic collection, remastered on two CDs, of twenty 78 rpm discs first issued by Gael Linn from 1957 to 1961: 43 performances by outstanding solo singers in Irish from Irish-speaaking districts and solo musicians from the rest of Ireland on fiddle, flute, accordion and uilleann pipes." ~ all unaccompanied…

There’s also a hefty booklet included, featuring a history of Gael Linn and these early 78 rpm recordings, and notes on the artists and their contributions, the individual tracks. These 78s were aimed in the main at the Irish speaking enclaves of Ireland, where wind up phonograph players were, at the time, more common than electricity. One side featured singing in Irish while the other featured a instrumental solo. Intrinsic in being part of a passion to preserve and promote the language, for the purposes of education and clarity, they are all unaccompanied performances, beautifully raw and real.

An unexpected blessing, I consider this package to be one of the best gifts of recorded music I have ever recieved. I love it. It might not suit ears and egos obsessed with the nuovo and modern flash, the polish and heavy arrangement of some of the recordings of the 20th aand 21st century recordings of Irish music, but for me that is it’s greatest charm, that it is ‘unaccompanied’, that it is not dicked around with by arranging and too much technical diddling…

Nice job Gael Linn, Harry and the gang, much appreciated… It has already given me many hours of pleasure…
