Duignan & Horan
I was surprised this hadn’t been posted already, but it seems to be quite a hard recording to track down. I don’t believe it ever made it onto CD in its’ entirety, although one compilation CD, combined with some tracks by Sean McAloon and John Rea, has 9 of the tracks on it. "Ossian" in Cork did release it as a cassette tape, I think around 1991. A bit of a “warts and all” recording, you get the feeling that this was a “field” recording done in one fell swoop. Lively playing though.
A great recording, mostly duet (flute & fiddle), but with a few solo recordings of each. So who actually owns the right? Put me in touch.
Duignan & Horan
Hi, Kevin - This recording was discussed [ in all its’ various incarnations ] on the “Chiff & Fipple” flute forum recently. The joint CD with Rea and McAloon was on Robin Morton’s “Temple” label. Robin is manager of the “Battlefield Band” and could be contacted through either their website, or “Temple’s” own website. I think he may have been involved in the original recording, and played bodhran on the album. He would be the first person to contact.
I’m not 100% sure, but I think all of the recordings which were made by the “Topic” label were bought by Dave Bulmer after the company went bust. How it got to “Temple”, I have no idea, but it may be something to do with Robin Morton’s involvement.
Catalogue numbers of the recordings can be got from the discussion on “Chiff & Fipple” website.
FULL HOUSE!!!
Maybe…
I think possibly all the tunes on this recording are actually in the database, but the links won’t necessarily take you to the correct tune first time. Anyone looking for any specific tune would be advised to do a search and look through all the possible tunes listed. The one that I’m not sure about is on Track 11, listed as "Highland". I know it from somewhere, but can’t think where or when. It’s not the tune you’ll be directed to by the link.
I have to own up to changing some of the titles from the recording sleeve. Many of them seemed to be "one-off" names for tunes, ie - names you wouldn’t find associated to the tunes anywhere apart from this recording.
Oh - and the "Wind That Shakes The Barley" version is very different from the standard version. So different that I may well post it soon.
Good news…to be issued on CD…
According to Fintan Vallely a couple of weeks back at Hammy’s "Flute Gathering" in Ballyvourney, this recording is to be released in CD format sometime this summer.
‘Music from Co.Leitrim’ Packie Duignan & Seamus Horan 1978 LP
Hi, i’m wondering does anyone have the original 1978 Vinyl LP version of this recording? I’m aware it was produced onto cassette in 1993 but i’m love to get the original record. Any chance anyone has it hidden away in their attic and willing to part with it?
Re: ‘Music from Co.Leitrim’ Packie Duignan & Seamus Horan 1978 LP
Keep an eye on ebay. It comes up occasionally but goes at a price.
Re: ‘Music from Co.Leitrim’ Packie Duignan & Seamus Horan 1978 LP
Fintan Vallely told the assembled hosts at Hammy’s Flute Gathering 2 months ago that this recording is due for release on CD this summer, as is Josie McDermott’s "Darby’s Farewell" recording.
eBay is probably your best bet, as the Prof says, but I’ve only seen it twice in the last 5 years.
Re: ‘Music from Co.Leitrim’ Packie Duignan & Seamus Horan 1978 LP
Hmm,
Both the Duignan/Horan and McDermott albums were originally issued by Topic. It’s highly unlikely that the label will reissue these in CD format, but more than possible that it’ll be making them available as downloads.
Re: ‘Music from Co.Leitrim’ Packie Duignan & Seamus Horan 1978 LP
I’m just reporting what Fintan told an assembly of over 40 flute players. He said he’d been asked to provide updated sleeve notes for these releases. If you choose not to believe him, or my repeating what he said, that’s up to you.
Re: ‘Music from Co.Leitrim’ Packie Duignan & Seamus Horan 1978 LP
PS - CDs were mentioned, downloads were not, as I recall.
Re: ‘Music from Co.Leitrim’ Packie Duignan & Seamus Horan 1978 LP
Kenny,
Unless Topic has had a serious reconsideration of its marketing policy (which I doubt, knowing its MD Tony Engle), I’d be very surprised to see these albums reappearing in CD format.
However, there’s always the possibility that Topic has licensed the albums to another label for reissue. In which case, hallelujah!
Re: ‘Music from Co.Leitrim’ Packie Duignan & Seamus Horan 1978 LP
I was able to acquire "Darby’s Farewell" on CD through Amazon UK several months ago. I believe that there is still a copy available.

Re: ‘Music from Co.Leitrim’ Packie Duignan & Seamus Horan 1978 LP
That’ll be the Ossian reissue from some years back, MorganYYZ.
Re: ‘Music from Co.Leitrim’ Packie Duignan & Seamus Horan 1978 LP
Kenny do you know who is going to re-release the recording?
I’ll keep an eye on ebay. I seen one was for sale on it back in January
Duignan/Horan recording
Several tracks from the Duignan/Horan LP have already been released on a compilation CD made by Robin Morton’s "Temple" label, so if he’s been able to release some of them on a CD, it would be logical to assume he has the necessary permissions to re-release the whole recording, if he thinks it commercially viable and if he wishes to do so.
Robin Morton also made the recordings of Josie McDermott, and I think produced the original LP. He has probably negotiated a deal with whoever is necessary to obtain permission from - I assume Topic records, as "scutcher" says above - so that he can re-issue the recording on CD.
Digital release, and now on iTunes.
This recording now appears to be available - all 16 tracks, plus a "digital booklet" - for digital download from "Topic records" through their website, and is also on iTunes as I type this for the bargain sum of £5.99.
If you don’t have it, do yourselves a favour - go get it !
I should have mentioned previously that Sean Wynne plays whistle on tracks 5 & 13, and Robin Morton plays bodhran on tracks 2, 9, 11, 12 and 13.
Re: Music From Co.Leitrim
To add to the above, this recording is still available on "iTunes", and still for £5.99, but it’s not showing up above top right as other recordings do, probably because Packie Duignan’s name is mis-spelled in "iTunes" as "Duigan".
Re: Music From Co.Leitrim
Still on "iTunes", but the price has gone up to £6.99. Still worth it - there are very few recordings by these 2 fine musicians apart from this.

Where has this record been all my life?!!!
Re: Music From Co. Leitrim
Sadly appears not to be available on iTunes in the US for some bizarre reason.
Re: Music From Co. Leitrim
Hi Dan, I can’t remember if you have an Amazon account, but I found the recording available on there in the US:
