Two for Two

Submitted here is Larry Nugent’s second CD that came out in 1998. As the title suggests, it is dedicated to Larry’s twin sons, Sean and Emmet, each of whom are affectionately featured on the cover with their Dad holding a tin whistle.

For those of you who are familiar with Larry’s first CD, you will find a lot of the same rock-the-house-down whistle and flute playing. However, Larry has created a different musical experience for much of this CD. Whereas Larry’s first CD puts forth what I would characterize as straight-ahead traditional sound, this CD, while still traditional at the core, features tracks that are considerably more orchestrated and musically textured. The first track is a prime example this. Larry plays two traditional hornpipes on the whistle in the first track, but nevertheless creates a cool, funky feel to the set by blending string bass (played by Larry Gray) and the dumbek (played by Jackie Moran) into the rhythmic background.

However, I think the third track may very well take the cake for being one of the most beautifully arranged tunes in all of Irish music. It features Larry playing a slow air, Sean O’Dwyer of the Glen, on the low whistle. Liz Carrol, who also arranged the harmony for this track, plays fiddle in the background along with the mighty Marty Fahey on piano and Larry Gray on cello. A heart-wrenchingly gorgeous track indeed. Tracks 7 and 15 follow along in the same vein.

In short, this is a mighty CD for those who are into flute and whistle. But it is also a great source of cool new tunes, cool new approaches to old tunes, and for pure enjoyment.
