The Green House

Between last night and this morning, i listened to "The Green House". This one is with bodhran/geetar player Paddy League.

League is a pleasure to listen to, especially on the tracks that are just flute and bodhran.

Once again, Grey plays the concertina just as well as he does the flute. An interesting thing is that he tends to play the 2 instruments in a very similar way; for example, his ornamentation on the concertina is more or less the same as on the flute. Before i dug this, i was thinking the concertina sounded funny; he has an interesting "squeaky" way to do rolls, for example. But he does them the same way in the flute.

Grey’s mastery of the keyed flute is evident, and he rubs it in by including tracks in F, F dorian (= 3 flats), Bb, etc. Beautifully sounding instrument, an old American-made Firth&Pond flute with Abell headjoint.

All in all, this is a very pleasant CD to listen to. It’s mostly ITM, with some of Grey’s stuff thrown in.

The CD has 3 bonus tracks with old-timer melodeon player Michael Kennedy (b 1900) talking about music and playing "The Cuckoo’s Nest", stuff recorded for an LP that’s now unavailable. These 3 tracks are precious, probably worth the price of the CD.
