The Singing Kettle

Hot off the presses, so hot in fact that it doesn’t yet appear to be available from any online source. So, unless you happen to know any of the musicians in the group, be patient. It’s well worth it.

Chulrua (cool-ROO-ah) is Pat Egan (guitar, vocals), Paddy O’Brien (button accordion), and Patrick Ourceau (fiddle). This is the group’s 3rd CD, but the first featuring somewhat new member Patrick Ourceau.

This recording features a nice mix of traditional reels, jigs, and hornpipes. Although the songs are more recently composed (two by Mick Fitzgerald, one by Archie Fisher), they may as well be traditional. There’s nothing flashy or overproduced about the CD. Just wonderful traditional music from three masterful musicians. All three have a wonderful sense for the music and present not-so-well-known settings and arrangements of tunes that you may otherwise think are common tunes. Definitely worth adding to your collection.

Available (soon presumably) through Shanachie at http://www.shanachie.com or through the band’s website at http://www.chulrua.com.

Track 7 tune 1

is a marvelous, if slightly unusual, version of “The Reel with the Birl”, rather than just another of “Drowsy Maggie”. I have changed the tune link to show this. Great album!
