Appalchia Waltz

Appalachia Waltz is the first recording with the Yo-Yo Ma (cello), Edgar Meyer (double bass), Mark O’Connor (violin) trio, released in 1996. The album features, aside from some great fiddling and compositions by Mark O’Connor, the fantastic fiddling of Edgar Meyer on double bass. If any bass player has not heard this album, I would highly recommend it. I was hooked right from the first time I heard the opening track with Edgar Meyer playing the melody on The Green Groves of Erin. There are also some incredible pieces written by Meyer on the album, my favorites being Druid Fluid and Pickles. O’Connor’s composition Appalachia Waltz is a classic now, and there is also a version for solo cello that Yo-Yo Ma has recorded. Ma has fantastic performance, as usual, especially evidenced by his duet with O’Connor on F.C.’s Jig. If you haven’t heard this album yet, it’s worth the trip to the local library. Also check out the follow-up album Appalachian Journey which also features Alison Krauss and James Taylor.
