Sean Hernon - An Nora Bheag

A lovely recording, comprising mostly of Hernon’s Eb whistle backed by Eugene Kelly on piano. There are also two duets featuring Hernon on banjo and Johnny Connolly on melodeon, as well as two solos by the great sean nos singer Peadar O Ceannabhain. A few notes on the tunes: what Hernon calls the “Legacy Jig” I have previously known as “Larry Redican’s,” while what is listed as “Crawford’s” is widely known as “Christy Barry’s,” or, more precisely “Barry’s No. 1.” This is the first time I have heard this tune played without “Barry’s No. 2” following. I imagine that the title refers to the fact that Kevin Crawford popularised these jigs on his “D Flute” album, where he played them on whistle. On a final note, Hernon’s jig “Repeal of the Union” would seem to bear no relation to the reel that I know under the same name.
