“Music For The Sets - Volume 6: Face the Hob”
This set of six cassettes, created, published and distributed in the 1980s by Brooks Academy, Na Piobairi Uilleann was amongst the first recordings specifically produced for the sets. The talents are obvious, but the result is less than pleasant. They tend to be rushed and to not quite do justice to the tradition of set dancing they set out to represent. That representation, in my opinion, was not just, was damaging. For the adrenalin junkies out there, of which there are not few, this would be one of the first batches of meths in the musical sense…
Music for the Sets
I just got the 6 cassettes off eBay and , along with David J Taylor’s 2 tune books they are fiine source of tunes.
People do dance faster nowadays but you can interpret them as you wish
I also use matt Cunningham’s set of CDs
There are better sources for ‘ear training’ ~ for a few Sliabh Luachra examples ~

c: My appreciation for these six recordings is refreshed after being able to hear them again over the summer. I particularly enjoy that the uilleann pipes are used on many of the sets, brilliant, and there’s no denying the talent of the musicians present, lovely stuff, if not, in my opinion, particularly ‘great’ for dance, but still of interest and enjoyable none the less.
