“The Wheels Of The World: Classics Of Irish Traditional Music”

LP & cassette ~ Shanachie 33001, 12 tracks, 6 per side…

I have both, but only the cassette on hand, which has little or no notes. If anyone does have the sleeve notes for the LP, they would be welcome here.

For reasons unknown, when Shanachie created the two volume CD by the same name, “Wheels of the World: Early Irish American Music”, volumes 1 & 2, they left some of these tracks out and added more. Now the ‘more’ I can appreciate, but it’s a shame they dropped some of these. It’s an enjoyable collection of old 78s from the first half of the last century, the 20th…]

I think this was actually originally released on the Morning Star label, which was Dan Michael Collins’s baby. Then he and Rich Nevins teamed up with the Shanachie label for the Paddy Carty LP. Rich had been doing the boutique label thing for years, with his County label, which specialized in reissues of Old Time music.

A friend of mine offered to provide much superior dubs for the CD reissues but the deal fell through unfortunately, since he’s more handy with the gramophone than Rich and Dan, frankly. What was used was made decades ago, the same source as was used on the LP. Some of the cuts on the reissue are running at too fast a speed, the audio can be thin, on at least one track (Touhey playing the Morning Star etc.) you can hear the needle skip.

If I have time I’ll scan Barry O’Neill’s liner notes.

Hi, I have the original Shanachie l.p. No sleeve notes inside, they’are written on the back cover.
I can scan them: how can I add them here?

Ok, I don’t know how old where the original’s 78 rpm: Shanachie edition is 1976.
Talking about speed, on the notes is written… “our approach has been to reduce the number of revolutions per minute from 78 to 76 as there is evidence to suggest that these discs fall into a time and place wherein 75.5 rpm’s was extensively employed”…
