Suite
New CD from Kevin Burke and Cal Scott. Features “The Irish Session Suite”, tracks 4 (jigs), 5 (hornpipe), 6 (air), and 7(reels), which explores the possibilities of blending traditional and classical music. Kevin plays with additional parts for violin, viola, and cello, written by Cal. The classical parts are well done and do not overshadow Kevin’s trademark smooth and rythmic style. Highly recommended.

The “Paddy Fahy’s” in track 7 is the D dorian reel

Kevin Burke’s “Suite”
It’s great playing, and a good example of a very successful cross-over, but I wonder if this sort of thing, a string quartet playing Irish tunes, was done informally long ago in Ireland.
I’d thoroughly recommend this CD to those classical musicians who don’t seem to have much time for music outside the classical repertoire (a diminishing number, I’m glad to say).
