"Songs and Singers in Tory Island, Ireland"
This is a 26 track CD sold as part of a 300pp ethnographical monograph on Oileán Thoraí (Tory Island) first published in Irish by Cló Iar-Chonnachta (http://www.cic.ie/) in 2002 as: ‘Ar Chreag i Lár na Farraige’ by Lilli Ó Laoire. The book itself is ‘No.4’ in the ‘Europea: Ethnomusicologies and Modernities’ series. (The Scarecrow Press, Inc. 2005)
I won’t comment here on this unique body of research. Just a brief few notes about the CD itself: It is a compilation of recordings that span at least 2 generations: 1950-1989.
The majority of tracks are ‘a capella’ songs performed by various islanders.
Tracks 2,3 and 6 are instrumentals each recorded in the live context of a dance (stamping feet clearly audible). While 4 is a Set Dance tune played on the fiddle.
Tracks 5, 22, 24 are instances of communal singing and very moving.
