On A Different Note

This was just released on iTunes yesterday, so since I liked Michael Flatley’s first solo recording, released in 1986[?], and since I recently invested in an iPod Touch, I went and bought it - 25 tracks, the equivalent of a double CD. I’m afraid I’m a bit disappointed. The flute playing is very good, unsurprisingly reminiscent of Seamus Tansey’s playing in places, but I doubt very much if the bould Seamus would approve of some of the very heavy rock backing applied to many of the tracks. The choice of tunes is disappointing too, far too many hackneyed standards in there, although he has tried to do something a bit different with them. There are a few tracks which I really like - reels mostly, and I can listen to anyone playing "Colonel Fraser" [ track 18 ]. No traditional titles are provided for the tunes, so I’ve posted the tracks as they appear on iTunes, and ried to identify the tunes under the titles as they will appear here. There are 1 or 2 "Gan Ainms" which I haven’t come across before, and a very common hornpipe, whose name I can’t think of at the moment. I will come back and edit the track list when I remember.
One of Martin Mulhaire’s tunes is included. I hope he gets considerable royalties for it - maybe someone could let him know that his tune has been recorded on a CD which may well have very large sales considering the size of Mr. Flatley’s fan base.
