‘Family’ by Qristina and Quinn Bachand

Super talented brother and sister Qristina and Quinn Bachand come back with a second album, Family. Twelve tracks of great tunes and two songs sung by Qristina! This time Quinn also plays the banjo, the bodhrán and the fiddle. On this recording they’re joined by several great musicians, including Zac Leger, whom you know pretty well around here. It sounds great, so go buy it!

The prodigiously talented Canadian duo, Qristina and Quinn Bachand have launched their second full length album, Family, and it’s scorchingly hot! Recently honoured with the 2010 Irish Music Award for Top Traditional Group in Festival, Pub & Concert, Qristina & Quinn Bachand are have emerged at the top of the Celtic music world.

Twenty year old Qristina Bachand is an expressive fiddler, with a unique personal style that is bold and edgy. Fifteen year old, Quinn Bachand, is gaining recognition as one of the best Celtic guitar accompanists in the world (Ashley MacIsaac). Quinn adds a contemporary edge to traditional Celtic music; his hard-driving strumming, inventive chord voicing and powerful rhythmic effects make even the most well-worn tunes seem new and exciting. Qristina & Quinn Bachand create music that is challenging yet energetic, refreshing and fun. Their 2008 debut CD, Relative Minors garnered much attention and received a prestigious 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards Nomination.

Family, which was co-produced with Adrian Dolan, features a wonderful selection of Irish tunes in scintillating medleys and superb arrangements. Quinn amazes with his formidable talents not just on guitar, but on many other instruments and Qristina’s sparkling fiddle playing shines throughout. There are two lovely vocal tracks by Qristina and some cleverly "tweaked" tunes: reels into jigs, especially, but it’s the selection of jigs and reels and the duo’s powerful instrumentals that are the focal point of the album. Guest musicians include Adrian Dolan (accordion, mandola), Zac Leger (Uilleann pipes, flute, whistle), Felix Prummel (low whistle), Scott Senior (cajon, bongo, shakers & percussion), Bryan Skinner (bodhran) and Oliver Swain (upright bass, vocals). There have been quite a few West Coast Celtic bands over the past 25 years or so, but few have managed to stay so close to the tradition whilst also investing the material with such boundless energy and invention.

Qristina & Quinn have performed across Canada, the US and in Europe at major concerts & festivals. In addition to working with Qristina, Quinn regularly performs with Cape Breton fiddling sensation Ashley MacIsaac at festivals across Canada and as far away as Australia.
