Fureys

A 1981 compilation of recordings made between 1975 and 1981. Mainly contemporary songs - it was probably this recording which introduced Eric Bogle’s "Green Fields Of France" and also Ralph McTell’s "From Clare To Here" to Irish audiences. Pat Cooksey’s "The Reason I Left Mullingar", and also David Wilde’s "Shipyard Blues" are fine songs too. Only the 1 set of tunes, and 1 traditional song, "Gipsey Davy", interspersed with "The Old Bush Reel". I think it may have been soon after this that Finbar had his "Sweet Sixteen" hit, and then the band veered off in a more commercial direction. Not surprisingly, I don’t think there are any "Fureys" recordings listed here which were made after 1981.
Incidentally, I first heard the Fureys playing "Gipsey Davy" and the "Ask Me Father" set on John Peel’s late night programme when he had them as guests, under the band name of "Tam Linn" [ years before the Belfast McSherrys used the name, albeit spelt slightly differently ].

Ps…..

"Ask Me Father" on this recording is played as a reel, not in it’s usual rhythm.
