The Quiet House

A solo whistle recording by Noreen O’Sullivan, [ whom it appears has a couple of well-known musical brothers. ]
I’ll come back and comment later, as one member has experienced problems posting a recording today, and I wondered if the same would happen to me.

I hadn’t come across Noreen O’Sullivan before, but she launched this CD at the Willie Clancy week CD launch event at Spanish Point a few weeks ago. I noticed she had a John Sindt whistle on the table - [ still my favourite whistle maker ] - and asked if she’d used it on the recording. She had, so I decided to take a shot in the dark, and bought the CD, and I’m glad I did. Fluent, melodic playing and a fine choice of material too, especially the title track, one of 3 original compositions included on the recording. I especially like the unusual setting of "The Rambling Pitchfork", credited to Padraig O’Keeffe.
Complaints are fairly minor - it’s a bit short at 36 minutes, I would have loved to have heard more, and the whistle is a bit overwhelmed in places by the guest musicians on one or two tracks.
The best solo whistle recording I’ve heard in years.

3rd reel on Track 2 is listed on the CD insert as "Drowsy Maggie", but I’ve respectfully changed that to "The Tyrone Ashplant", which is the far more common name for the tune played on the CD.

Love this album - crisp clean playing of the highest quality … the best whistle album we’ve had since Brid O’Donoghue’s Tobar an Dúchais. The title track is a beautiful slow reel and the two jigs The Night I Spent In Ballarat /Cavan Fever are very catchy. Highly recommended to all aspiring whistlers - this, folks, is how its done.
