One of several CDs by accordion player John Whelan, on the "Narada" label. I’ll add more comments later.
John Whelan has made several recordings for the "Narada" label, using the "C" word in the title. I’m not sure it’s a good idea, but the record label must think so. It would be a shame if anyone was put off by the titles, as he’s undoubtedly an excellent player of the button accordion.
Apart from the 2 songs, all of the tunes on this CD are his original compositions. Only a few are in the traditional idiom - polkas, reels, jigs - several are modern "airs".
He has a fairly stellar group of guests on this recording, including :
Johnny Cunningham [ RIP ], Jerry Douglas, Seamus Egan, Winifred Horan, Pat Kilbride, Liz Knowles, Tim O’Brien and Jerry O’Sullivan. Track 5 is sung by Kathy Mattea.
He has some good tunes here, but to be honest, I prefer his playing of traditional material.
