“Sean McGuire: The Wild Irishman”
AME - All Media Entertainment, SICD5011, 2005
Hmmmmm? 8-) I’ll need to again set some time aside for this, to focus, before adding any comment, in order to temper my general dislike for Sean Maguire’s/McGuire’s ways with things… I’ll try to remember to return when I’m in a good mood. ;-)
My main reason for adding this is track 14, that set of marches a couple of old friends had learned from Sean…
The long road home ~ 8-)
I’ve been trying to push past my biases about the music of Sean McGuire/Maguire, but, to be honest, I’m not having much luck finding points of appreciation. I’ve been doing a lot of listening to different recordings, including today on a long drive. Part of that reason for being on the road was to stop to pick up my partner after a late meeting, to bring us both home and up the M6, with this disk still spinning but the volume turned down some so we cold talk, this CD now starting its second repeat.
Track 1 ~ "What are you listening to?", I was asked, note the ‘you’ in that, with a strong note of disapproval.
"Sean Maguire," I answered quietly, concentrating on the motorway traffic.
Track 2 ~ "It’s awful!"
"It’s Sean Maguire, a fiddler quite a lot of people like. Remember I used to play music with his brother Jim."
Track 3 ~ "It doesn’t sound Irish." It seems we share that opinion.
Track 4 ~ "He’s massacring it!" And, she made a face when she said that, and some unpleasant noises as Sean brought it to one of his usual saccharine ‘Olde Oprey’ endings.
Tracks 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9 ~ and no, her opionion didn’t change.
"I hope I don’t have to hear that again," as Sean finishes another air with one of his usual flourishes and she exits the car, while I grimace and the only thought that pops into my mind as I hit the button to eject the CD ~ "YUCK!"
But, I haven’t finished listening yet, but will change to something else if I’m not alone… :-D I’m more patient than my partner, but she’s a very good judge of character, even if I managed to get past safely… :-)
