"Cicio’r Nenbren: 20 o ddawnsfeydd gwerin Cymreig / 20 Welsh folk dances"

The five source recordings, by date of issue:

"Band y Gŵylwyr (w/Pat Shaw): Clwt Y Ddawns, 1 – Selection of Welsh Dances 1" - SAIN, 1975 - 1035 D /

"Band y Gŵylwyr (w/Pat Shaw): Clwt Y Ddawns, 2 - Selection of Welsh Dances 2" – SAIN, 1978 – 1098 D / C598

"Band y Betws: Clwt Y Ddawns, 3 - Selection of Welsh Dances 3" – SAIN, 1982 – 1267 D / C867

"Ar Log: Meillionen" - Dingles Music, 1983
Sadly Ar Log gave up their life and lift to Cymdeithas Ddawns Werin Cymru / The Welsh Folk Dance Society and consequently this recording is, in my opinion, their worst. It is not an inspiring recording, for musician or dancer. The same can be said for the rest of these recordings, though there is a pleasant listen now and then, for example having enjoyed the waltz set, track 9… The term ‘twee’ comes to mind, and B-movie melodrama, which is so often the result of the incomplete classical training and understanding of some musicians ~ IMO. 😛

" Band y Betws: Twmpath Dawns" – SAIN, 1986 - 1357D / C957

Re: Cicio’r Nenbren: 20 Welsh folk dances

I really enjoy Ar Log’s albums, but unfortunately I have to agree with the above comments about this one in particular. I don’t think this collection really does them credit. I have the actual Meillionen record and despite the dances all being in strict tempo, the music on it is bright, lively and happy. But somehow in the re-mastering of the 3 sets from the record for this collection, the sound has become much darker, the energy wiped away from it. What a shame!
