Re: Champions of Ireland - Uilleann Pipes

This CD appears to have been produced and marketed by Connoisseur Records / Connoisseur Music, which had an address of 162 Church Road, East Wall, Dublin 3, but is now listed as dissolved. The company didn’t necessarily get a great press (eg Kenny, ref “Champions of Ireland - Bodhran” - “The tune titles on that particular series of CDs are notoriously inaccurate. I seem to remember ‘The Queen Of The Rushes’ became ‘The Queen Of Russia’). So I couldn’t vouch for the accuracy of the tune titles here - although I did alter the title here from the “Planes of Boyle” to “Plains of Boyle” (musta been really flying on that one).
And the one review on Amazon complains about cheesy backing, electric bass, guitar etc. Personally I find it mostly fairly unobtrusive, and have heard much cheesier piano accompaniment. But hey there’s Kraft cheese and good cheese!
Anyway, more to the point, the piper Con Durham, who died in 2013, obviously had many friends and admirers, and this recording deserves to be heard. See various tributes to him at

The CD came out in 2006, so there’s probably not much chance of getting a vinyl copy anywhere, but it’s supposed to be available at

Re: Champions of Ireland - Uilleann Pipes

I’ve just listened to 7 of the tracks from the above recording, which are included in a French-released 3-CD compilation titled "Irelande * Les Instrumentes Celtes".
To my ear, Con Durham was certainly a very accomplished performer on uilleann pipes - track #11 in particular, is excellent - but the other tracks for me are totally ruined by some of the worst accompaniment this side of Michael Coleman. It sounds to me as though the electric guitar and bass were grafted on at a later date by some rejects from "Spinal Tap" - nothing short of musical vandalism. No disrespect to the actual players, they had a job to do, I suppose, but a great shame, he deserved better from the "musical director / arranger".
RIP, Con Durham.

Re: Champions of Ireland - Uilleann Pipes, second tune track 8

Second tune track 8 appears to be a version of The Earl’s Chair
