Re: The Legacy of Stephen Grier

This is a selection of tunes from the important nineteenth-century manuscript collection of Stephen Grier (1824–1894). Grier was born in north Longford (in the Granard/Clonbroney/Abbeylara area) and moved after his marriage to Gortletteragh in south Leitrim where he completed most of his remarkable music collection. The 2018 recording by Séamus McGuire & John Lee presents a varied selection of tunes, intended to reflect the wide range of material in Grier’s manuscripts. Apart from sixty-four tunes in Breandán Breatnach’s ‘Ceol Rince na hÉireann’ Vol 4, edited by Jackie Small (1996), the Grier manuscripts have not been published. This is the first known recording devoted entirely to music from the Grier collection.
