Re: Lantern Burn

I first came across the Rankin sisters, from Cape Breton, when some of them accompanied the Chieftains on the song "Jimmy Mo Mhile Stor." I found this album recently, and think that they are great singers. I was very surprised, owing to the large selection of Cape Breton music here, that this recording was not already on here.

Re: Lantern Burn

Maybe because there isn’t any Irish music on it.

Re: Lantern Burn

I post a lot of CB recordings when I find them, but usually the ones where a lot of tunes on The Session will end up linking. To my mind, as long as a recording will have a decent number of linked tunes upon posting, it’s worth having here, if only for the sake of documentation.

Re: Lantern Burn

That’s good to know. I thought the general concensus on here was to still post recordings even if there are not many that do link. Either way, this is a very enjoyable album.

Re: Lantern Burn

Track 6, the tune is actually Cawdor Fair (Not Cawdon).
I do realise that that there may be a mistake on the actual album itself.

Re: Lantern Burn

Thanks, Johnny. Edited the spelling.

Re: Lantern Burn

Wanderer, I think there is some confusion here…. Rita and Mary are not the Rankin sisters (Heather, Cookie and Raylene, part of the Rankin Family band) who recorded with the Chieftains. They may be connected, but not part of that branch as far as I know.

Re: Lantern Burn

Thanks for clarifying, Adrian. It appears that these Rankins are also from CB. They could very well be from another branch of the Rankin family. I shall have to read more on this when I have the chance.

Re: Lantern Burn

Yes, in fact they are from Mabou (or the Coal Mines), same as the other Rankins, so I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they were connected. There is even a Rankinville near Mabou. I heard Rita and Mary sing once at a candlelight concert in the Chapel at Fortress Louisbourg. Very beautiful.
