Re: Paddy playing his own compositions (recorded by Maria Holohan)

Paddey Fahey did not give titles to his compositions. Maria Holohan wrote in october 1995 a thesis and associated with it recordings of Paddy playing them (or part of them !). She wrote the transcriptions of each recorded piece of music and numbered each one (in the recordings, and on the music sheets).
You can notice that she has written down more transcriptions of tunes than what she recorded : “missing” recorded tunes are jigs nos 1, 2, 3, 12 and reels 9, 12, 17, 18, 19). There is a missing transcription concerning jig #7 which has been inadvertantly replaced by reel #7. Hopefully, there is a recording for this jig #7.
Given the rule on the session that forbids to give numbers to the (main) titles of tunes, it can be rather boring to research a given composition by Paddy Fahey.
I find usefull to put in the recordings section the list of those recordings even if they all have quite the same name. This allows to precise the numbers of the compositions that were attributed at the time by Maria and doing that to associate the link toward the actual tune (since now one can modify the link so as to correct false automatic linking).
I added some comments concerning tunes for which subsist uncertainty (all the less to my eyes). Some tunes in thesession.org database can sort of overflow MHI. These tunes mentionned on recordings of authorized musicians, witness those were composed after Maria published her thesis.

This isn’t a “Recording”. Belongs in “Discussions”.

Re: Paddy playing his own compositions (recorded by Maria Holohan)

This IS a recording.
This section is not reserved to “commercial” recordings as far as I am aware. I seem to remember that I already saw other unusual recordings here like bootlegs or other stuff of that kind.
Furthermore, this section offers a valuable way to connect the tunes of a list of “recordings” to their transcriptions in the database. Which can be helpfull given the complexity of Paddy Fahey’s tunography.
So, what is the problem ?

Why shouldn’t this recording be here ?

Take that one of Brid Harper for example :
https://thesession.org/recordings/1348
Nobody complained about it.
I think the recordings made by Maria are sufficiently widespread (I have one !) that they deserve their own entry here.

Re: Paddy playing his own compositions (recorded by Maria Holohan)

It is undoubtedly, “ a recording”. I have several hundred cassette tapes which are “recordings”. Would it be OK for me to post them here, then, according to your logic ?
The whole point of the “Recordings” section on this website - as far as I know - is to make people aware of commercially available [ or no longer available ] recordings they might not know about, and provide some commentary on them, recommendation or otherwise.
“other unusual recordings here like bootlegs or other stuff of that kind.” I’m entirely consistent on that - they shouldn’t be here either, but it’s Jeremy’s website. Up to him.

Kenny, you cannot compare hundreds of cassettes that only you, and perhaps some happy fews with which you may share them, can enjoy with recordings that are largely spread over the entire diaspora of ITM amateurs. Furthermore, I will say that the recordings of Maria Holohan, as well as her writing and transcriptions, are essential and establish de facto a standard.

Re: Paddy playing his own compositions (recorded by Maria Holohan)

Thanks so much for this, Didier. It doesn’t matter where it is located, but it is a wonderful resource to have here on thesession. An argument in favour of keeping it here, is that it is much easier to search for it as a recording by Paddy Fahey than it would be to search for it as a discussion of Paddy’s recordings and Maria’s thesis (i.e. if it were to be moved to ‘Discussions’).

didier,
Thanks for this resource. Much appreciated!

Re: Paddy playing his own compositions (recorded by Maria Holohan)

Trying to make sense of this entire post. Bottom line:

Where can these recordings and those of “the Gort session” be acquired?

@ceemonster

These are non-commercial field recordings.
For the Fahey’s, you have them now on YT. For the Gort sessions’, I haven’t them, see with BansheeWailsOverTheMangoPit…

Re: Paddy playing his own compositions (recorded by Maria Holohan)

Sorry Kenny…I have to agree with Didier on this. This is an extremely widespread and valuable recording and is a clever solution to the PF tune link issue. I’m surprised you felt you should call him out on this one. It cannot compare to any other field recording that I’m aware of.

Very good indeed Didier.
