Re: Brightly or Darkly

And another beauty it is too….

Re: Brightly or Darkly

I just got the CD and it is awesome. They have all the tunings on their liner notes. Does anyone have a guide for how to tune a fiddle to those different keys? Thanks!

Re: Brightly or Darkly

Fantastic album, just like their first one! I got the album on Apple music, so unfortunately no liner notes. Any chance you could share the tunings for each track?

Re: Brightly or Darkly

I knew that opening track first tune sounded familiar :

I wonder how this set came together - “Any Old Time” recorded “The Monaghan Twig” followed by “The Pope’s Toe” = “Sir George MacKenzie”. Paddy O’Brien, James Kelly and Daithi Sproule recorded “Sean Sa Ceo” after “The Monaghan Twig”. Perhaps an insight into somebody’s recordings collection, or maybe entirely coincidental. In any case , I like what I’ve listened to so far, lovely duet playing.

Re: Brightly or Darkly

Tuning of tracks (from liner notes + my assumption on how to tune your fiddle)
1. Bb –> fiddle tuning Eb Bb F C
2. B –> tuning E B F# C#
3. C# high bass –> tuning G# C# G# D#
4. G# cross –> tuning G# D# G# D#
5. Standard
6. Eb –> tunning Ab Eb Bb F
7. Nathan in B and Laura in B high bass (tuning F# B F# C#)
8. Nathan in Eb cross (tuning Eb Bb Eb Bb) Laura in Eb high bass (tuning Bb Eb Bb F)
9. Eb
10. G# cross
11. Standard
12. Nathan in B and Laura in B high bass
13. B
14. G# cross
15. Nathan in C# high bass, Laura in drop C# (tuning G C# A E ? not sure about that one)
16. Nathan in F# cross (tuning F# C# F# C#), Laura in C# (tuning F# C# G# D#)

To be tried and confirmed, a lot of tuning to test 🙂

Re: Brightly or Darkly

Awesome, thanks! Those are some real brainteasers for the fingers!

Re: Brightly or Darkly

Just a note, I found noodling around today that most of the tracks can be played by just tuning each string up a half step. This is helpful as the fingering doesn’t change from how you’d play the tunes in standard tuning.

Re: Brightly or Darkly

Been listening to this one a lot and struck by the good choice of tunes (eg neer shall I wean her, a cracking jig) and the lovely relaxed pace, which lets all the phrasing and Nyah stand out properly. Just makes you want to shout “Gwan!” Or “Up Bohola!” as if you were in the pub.

Re: Brightly or Darkly

And by relaxed pace I mean for example that the Morning Thrush is played at about 95bpm

Re: Brightly or Darkly

Seems like “Callaghan’s”, the reel on track 7, should probably be linked to “Cal Callaghan’s” (the reel at https://thesession.org/tunes/1731) rather than “Callaghan’s” (hornpipe) as it is now.
