An Historic Recording Of Irish Traditional Music From County Clare and East Galway

This recording was recommended to me as a “bible” of Irish music by a fellow session-goer. It’s good though poorly recorded. Patrick Orceau and another fiddler played the first set a few weeks ago at Blaggard’s sunday session in NYC. It sounded great but no one else knew the tunes (except Earl’s Chair where everyone joined in). But if it’s a bible (as implied by it’s own title) I’d expect someone else would have posted it by now.

Yeah, I’m also surprised that this on wasn’t here yet. That first set of tunes is classic. Recorded as a set by Mary Macnamara on her first CD, Kevin Burke with Martin Hayes on Live in Seattle, and someone else that I just saw but can’t remember (a piper, maybe?) Great set. I’ve just learned it and am trying to get my session-mates to learn it.

Looks like every single tune on the CD is in the Session database, though a couple of links will have to be made to take into account that “The Nightingale” doesn’t get equated with “Nightingale, The”, and “Grogan’s” is a.k.a. “Geoghan’s”, “Geogahan’s”, (or a few other spellings) or “Eileen O’Callaghan’s”. I’ll see if I can fix that now.

On track 4 the link takes you to Egan’s Polka. It is a tune called Egan’s, but on the session tunes it is called The Humours of Castlefinn

I’ve got a CD that has all these sets on it, but in a different order. The CD’s called “Meet Paddy Canny (All-Ireland Champion - Violin)”

Domnull, the listing here is for the Shanachie reissue of the original Dublin Records album. For some reason Shanachie completely reorganised the album and also decided to crop some of Bridie Lafferty’s piano introductions.
