Gosh a session in the Diggers - is the beer as good as it used to be 20 years ago ? If so may have to arrange my next trip to the home land to attend
The beer’s nothing special these days. ;-(
Rohan, did this used to be the Tuesday session or is it still on the go?
I know it was originally an ALP session led by Derek Hoy.
John J: yes, this is what used to be the Tuesday session, which had to move because of competition for the back room from dominoes tournaments and the like…
Start time is 8.30pm to 9pm, I think (?).
I went on Wednesday - A really enjoyable, well organised session of around 15 to 20 players of various instruments (including 1 cittern, 2 pipes, 2 PAs , 1 very loud anglo - me). All very friendly and not too fast - nearly all Scottish tunes. They even turned the Hearts/Celtic match off the tv in the room.
Will go again!!
The only downside was being kicked out at midnight.
I feel a bit cheeky that I posted the listing as I’d only been a couple of times (and I don’t seem to be able to delete it!)
Anyway, this is still going strong and I understand that it did indeed originate from an ALP class i.e. the Adult Learning Project - Scots Music Group (http://www.alpscotsmusic.org/).
It is not suitable for beginners but is pleasantly free from turbo-speed playing too and does very much keep to predominantly scots-style tunes.
The group has taken to beginning slightly earlier over the summer months (from 8pm-ish).
Speak to Gordon if you’d like to be on the email list to be informed of occasional cancellations (especially clashes with Hearts home games)
Popped into the Diggers this week and they even remembered my name (from 7 months ago), now that is friendly!!
Damn good session, not too-fast.
Due to some building work about to be undertaken inside the pub, the session has been suspended temporarily as of 28th November 2012. We hope to re-start mid to end January 2013, but will post here again when we know.
In the meantime, there may be some activity on a house-session basis, or possibly at an alternate venue, so contact me by email (niall dot h dot anderson at gmail dot com) if you would like to be brought up to date.
Session has temporarily relocated to the West End Hotel, Palmerston Place, Edinburgh, EH12 5AU. Start time 9pm, finish time around 11.30pm. We expect to be there into February 2013, but with luck not much beyond!
The session is now in the Oxford Bar, 8 Young Street, after the West End started calling time at 10.15pm! Once the soundproofing is sorted out, we’ll be back in the Diggers–but this is builders time, so who knows when? If in doubt email Niall as above, or phone the Diggers (aka Athletic arms).
At long last, the session will be re-starting in the back room at Diggers on 3rd July 2013 (only 6 months later than planned!). All the details above should now apply.
Now a Tuesday Session
ex Argyle Bar, White Horse Session…
Wed 9pm Diggers session alive and well.
Just confirming that the session in the Diggers on Wednesday, from 9pm, is thriving! Last post, about Tuesday, Argyll bar?––shome mishtake surely??
PS there is a pre-session singaround from 8, on the first Wednesday of the month.
It remains the same
I’ ve just come back from a session there, and it is still as described, from 8 to 9 pm singing (because it is the first wednesday of the month) and then a very nice instrumental session. They are open and welcoming to new musicians, highly enjoyable!
No regular singing session but the early shift tune-players get started around 8.30pm most weeks now.
Re: Diggers (Athletic Arms)
Still a thriving session in the back room from 9pm, mostly insulated from the main bar noise. And decent beer and whisky selection! Mainly Scots/Shetland trad, generally welcoming and supportive.
