Sessions here every night from 9.30 is. Totally different people from one night to the next. There are sessions most nights (definitely tue, thurs, fri and sat, probably mon and wed too. Seamus Creagh plays on a tuesday. Othernights there have been fiddles, flutes, button box, guitar etc. Can be quite noisy, but musicians have their own section to sit in so if it is noisy its not as bad as it otherwise might be. A great pub and you’ll meet lots of good musicians. Enjoy.

Catch the superbly musical Moynihan family (inc Deidre and Dermot) on thursdays (I think).

If you’re into singing, go to the Cork Singers’ Club on Sundays (except July/August), from 9.30PM. It’s up the stairs. No instruments!

Spailpín Fánach session (cork city) ?

Hi,

I am in county cork. I wish I could go to a local session so I found this place in the city (Spailpín Fánach). I am curious wether there is a session tonight or anywhere else ? I wonder if I could play my flute as I know people don’t really like newcomers and especially "tourists". So if there are any people here coming to this session tonight or any other sessions please answer me :-)

Re: Spailpín Fánach session (cork city) ?

If you are a beginner then be prepared….the standard in the Mutton Lane is fairly high and can wander away from Irish music towards blue grass or eastern European music. The Spailpin on a Monday is usually anchored by college students and as most wouldn’t be locals they would no doubt understand your plight of being a newcomer or ‘tourist’. Be not afraid…..the musicians don’t bite…to my knowledge.

In Carrigaline, south of the City, also on a Monday starting at 10pm in the Carrigaline Court Hotel, is a really friendly session where plenty of Comhaltas and so called common tunes are played. This is a very welcoming session for all, beginners, improvers and advanced musicians included.

The first Friday session is on this coming Friday in the Corner House starting at around 6.00pm. The real trad heads of Cork congregate here for a monthly session of tasty Sliabh Luchra music and strictly traditional tunes. This session is always worth a visit.

Plenty of students there Sunday two weeks ago. Nice tunes, but we felt we didn’t really blend in with the 20 year old, so we listened. Started around 9.30 pm

Session on Friday 1 Aug

Hi
am in Cork tomorrow night, play bouzouki here in Portsmouth; is it a session to join in with or a listening one?

Cheers!

There are sessions there every night of the week I believe, but the times I’ve been there are Wednesday and Saturday, with a couple younger lads leading it. Good bit of singing, along with the tunes, and one of the leaders is a very good banjo player. Very welcoming, had me feeling like a part of the group in no time. Session starts around 9.30 if I recall correctly. I didn’t go any other nights, but seems like a nice venue.
