B.D. Riley’s Irish Pub Downtown

204 East Sixth Street, Austin, Texas, USA

Session starts at 7:00 and goes until Midnight.

Easily the hottest ITM session in the Lone Star State. Great players. Great crowd. Haven’t been there in months, but I hear it’s still going strong.

Stop/Start Times

Lately, the session hasn’t gotten started til8pm, and since the pub closes at midnight wrapping up by 11:30pm is appreciated. 6-8 fairly "regular" musicians and many drop-iins, with as many as 14 or 16 on stage at a time.

I’ll be there in March

I’m going to be in Austin for the Interactive part of the South by SouthWest festival (March 11 - 15):

I see that B.D.Riley’s isn’t too far from the convention center:

I’m definitely going to try to get down there for the Sunday night session. I’m not sure if I’ll be bringing my bouzouki or not (always a bit of a hassle on airplanes) but I could always bring my mandolin.

Maybe I’ll get some of my fellow geeks ‘round from the festival. I see that the pub has free WiFi 🙂

Still running, session leader sought

Kenny Tweedy, long time leader and host of the Session at B.D. Riley’s is taking some time off, so the session is now rotating hosts. Still plenty of fine traditional music, and perhaps an opportunity for a new weekly leader to step into Kenny’s estimable musical shoes. Starts around 8, wraps up around 11:30, and the pub closes at 12 midnight on Sundays.

Session has moved, pretty much.

The new session leaders have moved it to Fiddler’s Green (listed elsewhere on this site). Some people might still be going to B.D. Riley’s, not sure.

Thanks to B.D. Riley’s for their years of support.

Session is Still On Every Sunday

Rumors of the death if this session are incorrect. "Leaders" aside, there are still fine traditional musicians who enjoy playing a session for listeners at a pub, who play at B.D. Riley’s every Sunday.

As we have always done for the 5 plus years we have hosted a session, we provide a complimentary drink tab for playing musicians.

A typical line-up includes a bodrhan, fiddle or two, guitar or bouzouki and whatever you’d like to add.

Session Update: Parking & Drinks Tab

Since parking near 6th Street can be difficult at times, the pub now provides a $5 PARKING REBATE FOR SESSION MUSICIANS who park in the lot at 7th & San Jacinto (LAZ Lot).

Just ask the attendant for a receipt in addition to the one that goes on your dash, bring it to the pub and you will receive a $5 refund.

Session musicians drink for free as well, so there should be no impediments to any who wish to come play and have fun.

Starts Closer to 9pm

Our session musicians have tended to arrive at 8:30 or so and get started about 9pm. All musicians are welcome anytime from about 7:30 on, right up till about 30 minutes before closing time (Midnight on Sunday)

3rd Sunday Session at Fiddler’s Green

While BD Riley’s still hosts a session every Sunday night, on the 3rd Sunday, the session at Fiddler’s Green draws musicians away so the Pub session is a bit spotty on the 3rd Sunday.

Every Sunday at Fiddler’s Green

Fiddler’s Green is now doing a session EVERY Sunday starting at 8:00. Only advanced players are invited to play. Advanced means more than two years playing Irish Tunes and at least 20 tunes memorized. I don’t know if BD Riley’s is still doing anything.

I’m working on memorizing 20 tunes so that I can participate at Fiddler’s Green, but I’m interested in any Sessions in Austin that are willing to let someone with musical experience but very little ITM experience sit in to learn.

Start time now 9 pm

Came to the session tonight only to discover that I was an hour early. They start at 9 according to the staff.

Re: B.D. Riley’s Irish Pub Downtown

Please check the DATES on these comments. This is the pub owner typing, on July 26, 2018

Our downtown pub Sunday session is alive and well, and begins when enough players gather, starting around 7:30pm. It runs till 11:30 pm, players permitting. The pub closes at midnight. Parking is free on the street or validated in the Littlefield Garage, entrance at 508 Brazos St, next to Gold’s Gym (bring your ticket in to the pub for validation). Players have a drinks tab too, as always! Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/bdrileyssession

Re: B.D. Riley’s Irish Pub Downtown

The Sunday Session at BD Riley’s is alive and well, every Sunday, unless there happens to be a Patriots Sunday Night Football game (or an occasional Super Bowl), or if it is St. Patrick’s Day. You can check the Pub’s facebook page to see if the session is not happening for some reason.
This is an intimate session, usually about 6-10 players. Very welcoming for newcomers. The pub is generally quiet on a Sunday, so players can hear each other well, and there is a chance to chat and get to know your fellow musicians. The patrons are usually quite appreciative.
Free drinks tab for session musicians and 25% off their menu. My favorite is the veggie burger on rye toast with a pile of thick-cut fries.
