Abq Bbq

Join us for a traditional Irish open music session. We play reels, jigs, hornpipes, waltzes, set dances, some Scottish Trad, and even do some singing. All are invited to participate or just to listen.

Day: Thursdays, starting September, 2018
Time: 7 - 9pm
Place: ABQ BBQ. 7520 4th St NW a, Los Ranchos De Albuquerque, NM 87107

Our hosts have great BBQ-style food, non-alcoholic beverages, and beer and wine available for purchase.

This is the former Jolliesse Chocolate Session and Blue Dragon Session. Those sessions are defunct.

We welcome a range of abilities. We have a few guidelines:

1. We generally play by memory, but if you feel you need to use written music, it is allowed.

2. We play slower and easier tunes early in the night progressing to more advanced tunes and sets later on.

3. Acceptable instruments are Fiddle, Flute, Mandolin, Guitar, Whistle, Zouk, Banjo, Tenor Guitar, Cello, Viola, Bodhran, and Bones. Other non-irish traditional instruments might or might not be allowed depending on how well you can integrate.

4. Bodran and Guitar players may on occasion be asked to limit to one of each for a tune. Generally we have not had to do this, but occasionally we have, mainly due to players of these instruments dominating un-musically, playing too loudly, not keeping the beat, or not listening well to the other musicians in the group. In the Irish music tradition, rhythm and accompaniment are subservient to melody.

5. When you have started and finish a tune, try and tell us what the name is. Some may not know.

6. Have fun!

ABQ BBQ has closed. We will update when we find a new location for our session. Meanwhile, we will try to have sessions at houses of our regulars. So send a message to us if you are coming to town.

Hi, I’m an int/advanced fiddler from Austin TX. I’ll probably be in ABQ Tues. Aug. 13. Any sessions then?

We have moved the session to the Hops Brewery taproom at 7222 4th St. just a little south of ABQ BBQ. We are still in the “beta” testing phase, to borrow a phrase, but if we settle in we will post as a new session. We generally play from around 7 pm to 9 pm, every Thursday, but a few folks might stay a bit longer. Taproom closes at 10 pm.

Good craft beer, some wine, and some non-alcoholic drinks. Their head brewer is the husband of one of our local Irish singers. They have a limited food menu with burgers, hot dogs, polish sausage, and various chips and dips. Those of us who usually get something to eat tend to arrive early.

Listeners and musicians who are underage can attend, but must have a parent present.

Taproom webpage is at https://www.hopsbrewery.com/los-ranchos-tap-room, or you can get info at their Facebook page.

All sessions in Albuquerque are cancelled due to the corona virus.
