The Star, Fishponds -Trad Night Cap with Wesley and friends
Players session by myself and Tricia (Co. Clare) with a guest player on rotation. Irish Trad. with emphasis on varied tunes, not just a reel- bashing session.
Very friendly, inclusive Irish owned and run bar. Can be rowdy but not lary, nice corner to play in with lovely homemade ales and classy Guiness, too.
We start playing at 9:00pm but the bar is usually too busy for an open session until after 10:30. So you may have to wait to sit down until then. We try to finish up by midnight with a slow air.
Re: The Star, Fishponds
Session is only open from 10:00 with a singaround of Irish ballads beforehand. Everyone welcome to this, especially if you want to bring elders to sing (or singalong to) old songs. Lovely atmosphere when we get a few joining in with singing and many come from around Bristol, especially to hear.
Later tunes can be to v high standard but speak to me when you come in and if you’re a beginner, you’ll get a chance to play at your pace. Bean an tí is usually me, so I’ll sort out anyone drowning others or taking over :D
STP PRESS: Session not on this Friday, 10th May 2019 but on all through June. We have a fortnight gap in July for second and third week but then back on again. Let me know if you’re visiting from out of town and you’ll be made most welcome. Wes.
Session is on the third Thursday of the month Starts at 8.30

Re: The Star
No Friday sessions anymore? No weekly sessions? Just went in there, and they said next Tuesday was the next one.

The Star, Fishponds
A new regular weekly session at the Star Inn in Fishponds, Bristol. This is an excellent Irish pub, that hosts a range of music, with an enthusiastic landlord.
The session currently runs on Saturday afternoons, 4pm normally until 7 or 8 but sometimes later. The session is of a very high standard, with excellent players joining. The tunes played are varied and often uncommonly heard tunes, though we play many old favourites too. Tunes (and the occasional song) are mainly but not entirely from the Irish tradition - but it’s not exclusive!
While the Irish sessions at the Star have always been extremely welcoming to all players, unfortunately because of current Covid 19 restrictions on numbers, we are limited to a small group of players and this means that this is not at the moment an open session.
However, if you would like to join this session, please get in touch with me via https://learntoplaythefiddle.co.uk/the-star-session and if there is space for you to join us we would love to include new players where possible.
Re: The Star
Hi tried to use the link to ask about the possibility of playing in the session when Covid/ space allows.
I could not make it work. Please can you give me some other contact details.
Re: The Star
There’s an unnecessary word in the link above.
Re: The Star
Started up again post-lockdown. Tuesday nights are rollicking sessions. All welcome.
Re: The Star - NOT RECOMMENDED
NOT RECOMMENDED. The star has been hosting sessions which have attracted a very large following. The star has been a great melting pot for folk musicians.
And out of nowhere the landlord has decided to close the session to ‘non-core’ players… *with absolutely no warning*. This has now happened twice to my awareness. How this has been handled shows complete disregard for the attendees of the session. I strongly object to the complete lack of communication.
The people affected have started a session at The Miners Arms, Mina road on Tuesday evenings. Go there instead.
