Roisín Dubh

Lovely pub run by the McGowan’s. Not sure when the sessions start up, or who is attending these days.

Attended one of the best sessions ever there some 4 years or so ago. Peter Horan was in full flight both on flute and fiddle and proved himself not only an outstanding musician but also a great person in the way he made a welcome for a couple of us newcomers to the session. I think the owner is Ted McGowan who would have been very closely associated with the All-Ireland winning céilí band, The Glenside, back in the sixties. For anyone visiting Gurteen, this session has to be a "must visit" one!

Roisin Dubh - Sessions

This is in my opinion more focussed on music and music-lovers rather than beer and whiskey lovers. Although I don’t object to someone having a few drinks, I can’t stand being hassled by some p*ss-artist who hasn’t a note in his head - drunk or sober.
Well having got that off my chest, I’d say the large room at the back in this pub is ideally suited to a session. The well known Peter Horan, who seems to know every tune ever known to man, is very welcoming to all comers, and going strong at 82 years of age. Ted McGowan apparently ran pubs in London for 25 years and, being from London myself, unnerves me a bit with his knowledge of the ‘network’ - Good pub, good music.

This session is running now for almost 40 years on the tuesdays, possibly one of the longest in the country,if not the world. Its a sesssion of tunes and songs ,
Over the years many great players have had a tune and a a pint here .
Of course its under treat now , both lack of customers and musicians are thin on the ground
So anyway its a friendly place and all are welcome……still

I was there for the Tuesday session. Players and patrons are very welcoming. The pub has a small town feel, and I got the impression that everyone there was from the nearby area. If your interested in local music history be sure to talk to owner Ted McGowan, and Father Joe while your there. The Michael Coleman institute is also in Gurteen, and worth checking out.

It is sad that Ted the owner has passed on, but he has left us all a great legacy.
So the session carries on every Tuesday it starts at 9ish or earlier if there is a wish. Its a mix of tunes some new some old , songs and craic. Its a very welcoming session and all musicians dancers etc are welcome to join in.
Thanks j

Re: Roisín Dubh

Hopefully the session is still on as of August 14, 2016? If so I will be there, all the way from Arizona.

Re: Roisín Dubh

Can anyone confirm if this legendary pub and it’s Tuesday night session is still in effect?

Re: Roisín Dubh

Yes

Re: Roisín Dubh

This is good news!

So glad I went to this session. Starts 10pm Tuesdays and had been going for 44 years. In Gurteen birthplace of Michael Coleman famous Irish fiddler. Small village with the Coleman music centre that has various events throughout the year. Tubbercurry I was told has lots of music on there too.

For me one of the best that I have been to as everyone was so welcoming and encouraging me to join in. From high end musicians to 9 years old joining in for their first session.

Patsy a local has been playing the tin whistle for about 70 years. Fiddles, accordion, bodhran, guitars too.

The walls of the old Irish pub has photos of all the famous Irish musicians that originated from this area.

If you are touring stay at the Hill Hotel, reasonable and a short walk - breakfast too usually from 10am.
