Laurel Swift plays it on YouTube with this name as does Elke Baker the US fiddler

Barham Down

I’ve been through a village called Barham in Kent, in the Elham Valley between Canterbury and Folkestone. (Elham is pronounced ‘Eelam’, btw.) It’s chalk country and there may well be a place nearby named, now or in former times, Barham Down.

However, the name Barham does occur in other places.

There is a windmill on a hill called Barham Down.

The 6/6 tune of the same name is in Wm Mittel book but still no confiramation of the 3/2 being in Playford>

Barham Down

It’s a nice tune. Come to think of it, I’ve heard it in an English-orientated session in Durham (UK).

X:2 “Barham Down” ~ the history bits, 1701 - 1728

& eight Playford editions from the 11th (1701) through to the 18th (1728)

From those editions here’s a rough breakdown of this longways triple minor, proper, dance "for as many as will" ~ noting that there have been several interpretations of this since, mostly duple minor and improper (See Youtube links that follow…)

First couple cast off into the 2nd couple’s places,
then arms round with both arms,
the same back again:
First couple cross over into the 2nd couple’s places,
then go the half figure,
the first couple lead down a-breast with 3rd couple
the 1st Man goes round the 3rd Man, and 1st Woman the same with the 3rd Women at the same time into the 2nd couple’s places .:

- a bit manic, hardly graceful, more akin to the rush hour foot traffic of the London underground…
