“The Road North” ~ a beautiful air by Alasdair Fraser

Here’s another way of looking at it in 6/8 time, though 6/4 would probably make more sense ~

A friend directed me here and to ease my troubled soul I decided to give this some air time and thought… Here’s hoping Alasdair won’t mind his lovely tune being added here. I prefer it much better without the heavy arrangements on the album, but I have been in the minority over such things before… 😉

I’ve also added this for a newbie to this site, an oboist no less…

Uh oh, where’d I put the transcription in the actual key? 😏

Bb Mixolydian (Bb / Eb / Ab) ~ as heard and first played

That explains it… I first took this off the album in the key I was hearing, which turns out to be Bb Mixolydian. The key I’ve given it in to start will be more friendly for a wider group of instruments, and a half step isn’t a huge move away from what I was hearing. It is possible the recording was sounding a half step sharp, which isn’t anything new. If winds wanted to go there you can follow the above D fingering on an Eb instrument.

I first played and wrote this out in Bb Mix, which isn’t something on this site anyway, when it comes to choosing keys, so I transposed it down a half step to A Mix…

Since there’s no Bb anything here as an option, and for relative keys there’s no c minor, the only option I’d have to give me three flats here would be F Dorian… 😛

For those who would prefer it that half step up, I’ll chase up the transcript and add it here later… I think I laid it down somewhere, maybe the kitchen?

For starters, here’s an easy option for conversion to dots and midi ~

Details

I wonder, if you had it in Bb mix, whether you had a pipe version? There are other details different from AF’s recording, which I’ve attempted to follow below. It’s the first play-through, there’s a bit of jumbling of bars in str 2 on the repeat, all in the spirit of the tune, but defeats the idea of a ‘definitive’ version. FWIW:
