I got this tune from the new Teada recording "Ceol & Cuimhne / Music & Memory". I got it from itunes so don’t know anything about it. Anybody else got any info?
If you’d bought the CD…….
"Brendan Tonra, originally from the Doocastle area of Co. Sligo/Mayo but now living in Boston is the composer of the final reel". [ this one ].
"Teada" are still the best Irish band around at the moment, as far as I’m concerned, and there are some great tunes on that recording.
Brendan Tonra, thanks Kenny. I just bought some of the tracks from it yesterday but it does look like some cracking tunes there. I should have bought the CD, I find it annoying with itunes that you can’t get any info, I’m always very interested in names and stories to tunes.
The Boston Sligo
Composed by Brendan Tonra, Doocastle, Co Mayo. Played by the Mulcahy Family in "The Reel Note".
The Boston-Sligo, X:3
Composed by Brendan Tonra, originally of Doocastle, Co. Mayo but for the majority of his life in Boston, Massachusetts. Tonra was a regular in many of the dance bands, playing in the Dudley St. Dancehalls, the Connacht Ceili Band, and Boston Comhaltas Ceili Band. He was awarded the TG4 Composer of the Year Award at the Gradam Cheoil in 2002 and has quite a few nice compositions, among them this one and his jig (https://thesession.org/tunes/451).
This is a transcription given to me by Helen Kisiel, a great piano player in her own rite who played frequently with Tonra, and who I would imagine played the chords transcribed.
Brendan can be heard playing this tune here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NY2xzRtY_kw
I usually pair this with the Lady Ann Montgomery (https://thesession.org/tunes/59).
