Miss Falconer

This setting of Miss Falconer is from "Allan’s Reels, Strathspeys and General Dance Music."

Miss Falconer

There’s a couple of wee errors in the ABC schriltz. There’s a couple of c’s with a natural sign when then don’t need one. Also there is an f marked as natural when it doesn’t need one. Though I think it should be marked natural and the tune actually be in A Dorian as all the other f’s are sharp.

Alternate Setting

Here is an alternate setting for Miss Falconer from the Fiddler’s Companion website

A Dorian

bogman,

Thanks for the comment. I agree, the tune could be notated in A Dorain like the alternate setting I just posted and the natural signs are not needed. But, I was trying to reproduce the score as it appears in the "Allan’s" book and the abc does that. That key signature and those unneeded accidentals are in the original. Here is an A Dorian version that may be easier to read

I thought that might be the case. Some of the older collections have ‘errors’, The Skye and Atholl Collections have settings that are not musically correct. I would think it would be better posting the correct layout here, you can still edit the abc before it get converted to dots, but it’s your posting and up to yourself.

I think you are right. I should have posted the A Dorian version and put the Allan’s version in the comments.

I just now tried to edit the abc’s before the dot’s appear but it will not let me change the heading - only the abc’s of the tune. I need to change the K to Ador to make it right.

I’ll try to better next time but am just going to leave this one as it is.

If you go to the tune’s title page and click "edit these details" you can change the key signature there.

The second part is very similar to the one of "Paddy Ryan’s Dream".

Key

I see no problem with calling this A minor. It cannot be Dorian with all those g#s.

Key

Nobody said D Dorian rwarford, you probably mean A Dorian and it can be A dorian with these g#s, that’s very common in old Scottish tunes with the g# being an accidental rather than a key note.

Key

I did not say D dorian.
A dorian does not have any accidentals other than F# - a minor can include F natural, F#, G natural and G#. Therefore there is no doubt that this is A minor, it’s all to do with the melodic minor scale the key signature for minor keys does not include all the information.
