Captain Lachlan MacPhail of Tiree

In response to a recent request. A pipe reel very popular in the Highlands of Scotland. Composed, I believe, by Peter Farquhar. If anyone has more to add on either the composer or the origin of the tune title, then please add some comments.

Key signature

As a fiddler, I play this in Amaj. Clearly this is strictly not correct when played on the pipes, but I hope I’m forgiven for posting it in this key.

Key

since the tune avoids the G it’s fair to call it Amajor

Captain Lachlan MacPhail of Tiree

I think that "Cach Mhor Fiddler" means Peter MacFarquhar, (1913-1979) . Peter was born in Tiree but was brought up in Skye. He was in the merchant navy, a sub-postmaster and postman in Skye, and a well-known piper taught by Pipe Major Willie MacDonald of the Scots Guards. Peter also composed that other great tune "’Kenny Gillies of Portnalong.’" Lachlan MacPhail was born on 6 Dec 1889 in Cornaigmore, Isle of Tiree, Argyll and died on 2 Sept 1961 in "Isle of Mull", Scotstoun, Glasgow.
