Tommy Bhetty’s

This is a lovely tune, both to listen to and to play

Posted by .

And just as a matter of interest, it is playing in the background when Minnie Driver and whatshisname are having a drink in a pub in ‘Good Will Hunting’ - I was dozing on the couch when my children were watching the video so I noticed it! I think recorded by Altan….

Yes, it is recorded by Altan on their album, The Red Crow. I love this tune very much. Thanks for submitting it! :)

Tommy Bhetty’s Waltz

"A beaufiful, unusual waltz from a neighbour of Ciaran Curran, Tommy ‘Bhetty’ Maguire, a fiddler from Kinawley, County Fermanagh." —- from the sleeve notes of "Altan: the first ten years."

Yes, the band used to play a lot of Fermanagh tunes.

I listened to different playings of this tune and I definitely like the Altans version most. It’s unusual but groovy as well. I love it!
It stands on its own and doesn’t need any second tune.

Re: Tommy Bhetty’s

Lovely tune. Agree re the Altan setting though it’s lovely also on Noel Battle/Roisin Broderick’s CD, "Up and About in the Morning."
Why is it referred to in some places as Cooley’s Waltz? Which Cooley?
