Dancing the Baby

Found this in O’Neill, but you won’t find it in all editions. I have no further information about its origins. Although it’s a Barndance, and it’s most effective played that way, it can also be played as a 3-part jig.
"Dancing the Baby" is one of the few tunes in my opinion which has a title relevant to the character of the tune ("Over the Ocean" is another one). Never heard it played in a session, although I did play it once, to a respectful silence ๐Ÿ™‚
If nothing else it’s not a bad bowing exercise for the fiddler - note the little trap in the 3rd bar of the 3rd part.

m

Sorry, I should have said the trap is in the 2nd beat of the 2nd bar of the 3rd part! I misread my ABC printout.

This is the polka setting.

On One At A Time John Sketon reckons it is a Scottish tune in origin. He has heard it played as a reel by Shetland fiddlers and as a pipe jig. He plays it as a flute reel.

Re: Dancing The Baby

Certain to be Scottish. Appears in one of the Scottish Ceilidh Books. Last time I heard it was as played by a whole lot of young pupils doing a "special" at the Picky Centre, Kirkwall, Orkney.

Re: Dancing The Baby

We play it in A but as a jig, as in X1 above, so lop one quaver off each group of 4 in the version at the top of the page: part of a Strip the Willow set we play. Incidentally can be played entirely on the "pull" on B/C accordion….until you reach max stretch, when you might have to put in a "push" E now and then!

Re: Dancing The Baby

Delightful tune for a rainy Saturday afternoon! Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚

Re: Dancing The Baby

Nice tune that somehow gives the feel of dancing the baby, last heard it in Orkney c 9 years ago. Does anyone know if it is actually Irish (does appear as stated in O’Neill’s book). But some Irish tunes in the book would surely be borrowings so it could be Scottish -as I thought having seen it in a Scottish ceilidh book.

The ceilidh book in question (fiddle) is a bit lax about saying who wrote tunes or where they came from eg not giving a Carolan tune its composer.
